The Bulga coal mining operation is located 15 kilometres south west of Singleton in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, adjacent to the town of Broke. It consists of a coal handling and preparation plant, an underground mine and an open cut operation that produces around 16 million tonnes of thermal and semi soft coking coal annually.
In my opinion, this is as a direct result of the increasing size and number of open cut coal mines in the area. I've witnessed the dust blowing from the mines in the Bulga area. Not only are mines risking the health of people in the vicinity because of the heavy metals contained in the dust, they are destroying land that was once valuable farmland.
